Shadow health and wellbeing boards are operating in all parts of the country and working to prepare for statutory running from April 2013.

Representatives of boards have shown an appetite for products that support boards to assess their progress and so, the Local Government Association has worked with the NHS Leadership Academy, Department of Health and other national organisations and representatives of health and wellbeing boards to co-produce a new development tool.

The tool builds on the achievements of previous self-assessment documents and aims to support boards to go beyond assessing their readiness, towards identifying how effective they are in practice and how that effectiveness can be improved.

Boards can use this tool to explore their strengths, opportunities to improve and develop a clear sense of purpose to help transform services and outcomes for local people.

The tool will be of interest to all health and wellbeing boards who may wish to share outcomes of their assessment with colleagues in their region.
